How to diet successfully!

We are all aware that too much fat, sugar and alcohol is not good for us but how realistic is it for us to ban these foods completely from our diet, forever? For most of us, this task is almost impossible and our good intentions will soon waiver. Moderation is a key to success, over indulgence in certain foods will almost certainly have a negative effect on our diet and health.

To lose weight with achievable diet success you need to consume fewer calories than your body burns, resulting in weight loss. Fat is stored in our body and just by cutting down on your calorie intake, forces your fat reserves to be used up to maintain the energy that your body needs. A diet should benefit from being nutritionally sound and of course tasty. Banning certain foods from your diet may not result in successful dieting because this can promote food cravings, over indulgence in the food that is banned leading to feelings of guilt. This can result in a relapse of your diet resolve and old eating habits return.

Diets that use meal replacements such as Slimfast and Mypoplex use low-fat and high protein substances in a shake form. These should not be used as a substitute for a long term diet plan. These types of diets should never be used for more than any 4 consecutive weeks. Calories are vital to the body; we can't manage for very long without them. The nutrition the body needs from calories is essential to maintain good health. The body's internal organs and muscles rely on nutrition to function. If we use a meal replacement for the short term, a week or two as a boost to weight loss is fine. If we use meal replacements for months then it will have an adverse effect on the health and well being of your body. The same can be said for diets that contain single food sources such as the soup or cabbage diet; these are based on similar ideas.

Another diet myth is to follow a low carb, high protein diet for the best approach to weight loss. This dieting myth originated from America. Many Hollywood celebrities have used this system to aid their weight loss. This dieting approach however has some negative points; it wouldn't be wise to follow this diet regime for long. The reason that this diet of low calorie and low carbohydrates is not a good one is because your body is forced to use carbs from muscles and the liver. Weight loss will be achieved but this will be mainly from water the body has stored and not the surplus fat, putting a strain on internal organs.

Carbohydrates have many positive attributes; they can satisfy your hunger and slowly release energy to fuel the body. Some of the most beneficial carbohydrates are whole grains, vegetables and fruit. Beans are an excellent source of carbohydrates delivering fiber, minerals and vitamins to the body promoting good health. Potatoes and bread can be eaten moderately, do make sure not to laden these foods with butter and sauces as these are full of fat. A high carb low fat diet is better for you than banning these foods from your diet. Your body will not crave these foods because you can allow them sensibly into your diet. Carbohydrates will quell hunger pains allowing you to stick to your diet and achieve realistic weight loss results.

Keeping yourself hydrated is a good idea; the best way in achieving this is to drink plenty of water. Water can help fill your stomach, it's a good idea to have a glass of water before you eat and take sips during your meal, sometimes we can confuse hunger for thirst. Water keeps the intestines healthy assisting undigested foods out of the body. Drinking water can help aid weight loss and keep the body hydrated but drinking water without cutting calories will not result in weight loss.

A widespread dieting myth is that fat is bad for you, this is untrue, in fact fats are critical to your well being. Essential fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6 cannot be produced in the body, so this needs to be supplemented by fats in food such as oily fish; great for the brain. As a recommendation it is advised that 35% of your daily calories comes from fat.

If you eat fewer calories than your body uses you will lose weight, but combining this with exercise your weight loss goals will be reached sooner. Exercising actually improves your mood, it releases chemicals in the brain which are called endorphins, giving you a feeling of well being. Getting motivated can be hard at first but there are a few simple steps that can be done to increase your daily activity, such as Walking to the local shops, more enthusiastic movements whilst cleaning the house, taking the stairs instead of the lift. Remember fewer calories and more movement equate weight loss.
