Through correct stomach workouts and training, these muscles will develop and you will benefit from all the hard work that you have put into it. Dependent on your fitness level, this may take anything from a year to eighteen months. Before you start training with your abdominal muscles you need to understand the group of muscles that make up what is commonly known as your core and more effectively, how to engage it. The core muscles are what surround the spine and provide structural support to hold it in place. There are many factors that have an effect on your core and the associated muscles which make up your core which can very simply become sleeping muscles but through correct diet and exercise on this area, your core will be activated and maintained naturally, flattening your stomach and giving you good posture. The body will become stronger and healthier if these muscles are working correctly.

The muscles which make up your core are as follows:

  • Transverse abdominal's
  • Oblique's
  • Rectus abdominus (6 pack)
  • Hip flexor muscles
  • Erector spinae
  • Glutius maximus
  • Glutius minimus and medius

The benefits of a healthy core
A healthy core can improve your posture, prevent spinal problems, prevent fatigue, prevent injury when manual handling and with less body fat you are lowering the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Importance of a neutral spine position
There are three curvatures on your spine which are the neck (cervical), middle (thoracic) and the lower (lumbar) and when they are all aligned correctly, this is the natural, neutral position of the spine where all joints are optimally aligned. It is important to maintain this position when carrying out exercise for obvious reasons. Understanding how to hold natural spine position will enable good posture and give an awareness of proper ergonomics when lifting and exercise. Maintain a neutral spine position at all times, when exercising, sitting, walking, standing etc.

To find the neutral spine position stand against a wall with your head, shoulders, bum and heels touching the wall, you will notice there is an arch on the lower back of your spine. You should be able to just slide the palm of your hand through this arch. Adjust your posture until this is possible but still keeping your body parts mentioned above touching the wall, this is the correct neutral, natural spine position which you should always try to maintain.
